It's 1876 in McCord's long-awaited follow-up to Mundy's Law (2013). The vultures are circling Taylorsville, Nebraska, where a crooked lawman fixing an election has Marshal Joe Mundy in his sights. Mundy is busy investigating a crime a shooting death in which the acting sheriff is implicated. When a cyclone levels half the town, the missing husband of Mundy's lover returns to run for sheriff, and the shooter strikes again. Then Mundy kills a murder suspect without a witness, and the sheriff stirs up a public outcry that gets the marshal suspended. Adam Carr, his loyal but inexperienced deputy, is single-handedly protecting the citizens of Taylorsville, so Mundy is on his own. Despite an over-large cast, the unhurried pace and ruminative dialogue lend authenticity to the characters, especially the enigmatic marshal. Although he can shoot a killer before dinner, then enjoy his food, it's Mundy's sharp mind, not his quick trigger, that gives his action scenes the force of a long rifle.--Greene, Jeanne Copyright 2018 Booklist
