Arizona Territory, 1884. Newt ""Widowmaker"" Jones hates his nickname, but he'll never shake it until he stops prizefighting. When he loses a rigged match, Lily Silks, who invested in the local gold mine, patches him up and offers him a job guarding a shipment of gold to the railroad over the gunpowder express, a road notorious for robberies. The stagecoach carrying Lily and Skitch, the mine manager, and forty thousand dollars in gold might as well have a bullseye painted on it. But Newt needs money to claim his horse, so he agrees to go along. Meanwhile, a road agent readies an ambush with aid from a crooked sheriff; Lily and Skitch make different plans for the gold; and two mysterious gunmen start trailing the coach. By the first bend in the road, the fate of the gold is in doubt and, from there, competition for it is nonstop. Coburn's latest has a twisty, surprising plot, smooth prose, and a protagonist who's not a stereotype. Good guy or bad? Readers will enjoy figuring Widowmaker out.--Jeanne Greene Copyright 2020 Booklist
