Things have come down to the wire for bounty hunter Charlotte "Charlie" Calamity Pax. If she and her sisters don't ensure that their fugitive mother makes it to her court date, they'll lose their home—and they have just days left. While on a decoy trip to a remote Rocky Mountain town, Charlie once again becomes embroiled in the drama of their local militia and catches the notice of surly firefighter Kieran Byrne, the main suspect in the recent murder of the militia's leader. Kieran's not sure what to make of Charlie, but he does know that staying away from her is proving impossible. Finding time for romance isn't high on either of their priority lists at the moment, but maybe if they can find Charlie's mom and clear Kieran's name—without getting shot or blown up in the process—they will also manage to find their HEA together in the end. VERDICT Ruggle's final "Beneath the Wild Sky" book (after Crossing Paths) brings the story of the Pax sisters to a satisfying conclusion. This lighthearted and irreverent contemporary series, a detour from her more serious romantic suspense fare, should appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich and Jennifer Crusie.—Rebecca Moe
