Late on a summer night in 1995, newlyweds Eddie and April Carter are driving to a cottage on Lake Michigan for a short honeymoon but take a wrong turn off the interstate. The two-lane road is deserted. They see a light in the trees and then a girl staggering along the road, bleeding. They pick her up and follow signs to the hospital in Coldlake Falls. Almost as soon as they get there, the girl dies, and Detective Quentin of the state police arrives. Quentin interrogates the couple and puts them up in a local B & B while he investigates them further. Eddie and April also investigate, learning that the first victim on that deserted stretch of Atticus Line, known as the Lost Girl, was never identified. In all there were six murders on Atticus Line, all unsolved, no pattern, rankling Quentin. But the locals believe the Lost Girl is real, and if you see a light, you’re her next victim. Once again, St. James has offered a gripping tale of crime tinged with the supernatural that crosses generations.
