A pastor for 10 years and now a professor of theology and culture, Taylor, in this deeply personal book, examines the Psalms Christologically; that is, through Jesus’ eyes. He regards the Psalter as “Christ’s own prayer book” and in that vein, he delivers a theme-rich work that examines such timeless issues as honesty, community, life, death, sadness, anger, joy, and more. Each of his 14 chapters concludes with a series of questions and exercises along with a prayer to, “put into practice the words of the psalms.” Taylor stresses that his book is not an introduction to the Psalms; it is, instead, one might say, a deeply felt meditation on the Psalter and its applicability to life. The book is graced with an afterword by the singer Bono (the Psalms are, after all, both poems and songs), who was featured in a short film Taylor produced that has garnered more than a million viewings on YouTube and might be considered a vital companion to this inspirational work.
