Buell Mace is a young man with a demon the urge to kill evidenced by his ever-present Remington revolver. After years away from home, he returns, planning to start over as a good son, partner, and friend. But after one visit to the fine house where his father lives with a new wife (the mother of a man Buell killed), he knows he doesn't belong. One place for a man with Buell's knowledge of violence might be behind a badge, but aware of his murderous urges, he turns it down. Yet when he gets involved in a three-way chess game between ranchers, drifters, and law-abiding citizens, he looks more like a lawman than a pathological killer. If he can just keep the body count down, he might not have to pay what the devil is due. Swenson's (Slate Creek, 2017) beautifully written Western focuses almost entirely on its uneducated, violent antihero, tragically alienated from his past but nonetheless appealing.--Greene, Jeanne Copyright 2010 Booklist
