The day that O'Grey's weight caused an airplane to delay takeoff was the day that shame of his girth propelled him into action. Turning to God in desperation, he prayed and sought the advice of a naturopath. She told the lawyer-turned-salesman to eat a plant-based diet, start walking and get a dog. Peety had had a difficult life and, like O'Grey, was overweight. Slowly, man and dog shed pounds and began to move more freely; people started talking to O'Grey, often asking about his dog. The colorful vegetable markets O'Grey was now frequenting inspired him to decorate his drab, empty apartment and make it a real home. In 10 months, he shed 120 pounds, made dietary tweaks to help rid himself of plaque psoriasis, and began dating again. At the center of all this change is Peety, a constant presence. Dogs don't live forever, though, and O'Grey is honest about heartbreak and dietary setbacks. This feel-good, easy-to-read book, coauthored with Dagostino and lightly sprinkled with scripture, is sure to inspire many readers.--Curbow, Joan Copyright 2017 Booklist

After more than a decade of being overweight, sick, and lonely, O'Grey sought help from a naturopathic doctor who advised him to adopt a plant-based diet and a shelter dog. Like O'Grey, Peety needed a healthier, less isolated lifestyle. Together, they began an amazing transformation. Most stories of successful weight loss emphasize gradual changes, and O'Grey's exercise plan followed this approach. He began walking Peety around the block, then extended their outings to parks and the larger community. Without Peety, who didn't enjoy running, O'Grey eventually joined a local running group, increasing his mileage and friendships. Readers may be surprised by how easily and quickly he transitioned from eating two pizzas in a single sitting to meals filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. For each healthy change, O'Grey scrupulously researched his options. He also found opportunities to share his story and continues to do so in social and popular media outlets. VERDICT Though Peety's influence on his transformation and his love for his dog are evident, a more central theme may be the author's transition to a plant-based diet. O'Grey's successful sales background translates well to his -advocacy.-Meagan Storey, Virginia Beach © Copyright 2017. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
