The benefits of summer reading for children are:

    Children are motivated to read.

Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books and the library.

Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.

Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.

Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.

Bridget Wilson, our Youth Services Librarian, has been busily planning and scheduling the Nantahala Regional Library's 2018 Summer Reading Program. It begins on Monday, June 11, 2018, and ends on Friday, July 27, 2018. This year the kids will be learning about musical instruments, jazz and other types of music, dance and movement, singing and rocks. We will again have a magician, Professor Whizzpop, who will present a program at all four of the libraries in our region. He was really well-received last year by kids and parents. His program is excellent and we are very happy to be able to have him back again this year! Bridget will also have rock painting, a coloring party and a Ferdinand party (because of the recent release of the movie, Ferdinand. This is a book about a bull who does not want to be mean!) Plus a reading challenge for children who are a few months old to 10 years old. The children who are younger than 5 years old complete early literacy activities each week for a prize. The children who are between the ages of 6 to 10 years old complete a game card each week also for a prize.

Bridget is also offering a coloring contest for this year's Summer Reading Program. The age categories are 3-5 years old, 6-8 years old, 9-12 years old, 13-18 years old and adults. You pick up a coloring sheet at any of the four libraries in our region beginning on Monday, July 30, 2018. You must turn in your completed sheet by Friday, August 17, 2018. Judges will pick one winner in each age category. Prizes will be awarded by Friday, August 31, 2018.

For the teens, Bridget is hosting a game night, rock painting, a rock & roll movie night, a "Minute to Win It" challenge, a craft night and a musical movie night. The teens also have their own reading challenge. This is for teens who are between the ages of 11 to 18 years old. Teens read or listen to age appropriate books for a minimum of 600 minutes between June 11, 2018, to July 27, 2018. Every teen who reads for the minimum time will receive a prize pack. The three teens who read the most minutes will win Wal-Mart gift cards.
