About LPL IOWA
The Livermore Public Library started in 1935, when the late Julia Behounek felt the need for a public library for her young boys who were avid readers. Julia discussed the need for a library with the Equality Club and they were inspired by her enthusiasm. Members of the Equality Club planned benefit card parties, teas and numerous fundraising projects to get the ball rolling for a library. With the aid of Livermore's Federated Club and the Twentieth Century Club, a small building was emptied near the Methodist Church. Townspeople shared books from their home bookshelves and the Equality Club helped purchase books with the proceeds from their fundraisers. Bernadine Hoganson was the first librarian and served for 10 years. The small building was primitive and hard to heat, so the books were moved to the Post Office for a while. If the librarian wasn't there, the postmaster would check out the book(s) for the patrons. In June 1938, Mayor Nelson appointed the first Livermore Library Trustees; these ladies set the first rules and standards for the library. The library was then moved to a room in City Hall. The Equality Club worked hard to pay for shelves and minimal equipment. The Equality Cub was disbanded on Sep 27, 1978. They were longtime friends and supporters for the library. Without their devotion to organize the library, it would have years before it actually started. A major grant was received from the Kinney Lindstrom Foundation and proceeds went to purchase a brick building that was built in 1930. This building was the former Veterinary office. The Kinney Lindstrom Foundation also helped purchase equipment and books and a MIDAS Grant made it possible to remodel the building. The town had numerous volunteers, monetary gifts and grants. With the help of a monetary gift, an addition was added to the property. Updates to the library were made yearly. The library then become an accredited library in the state of Iowa. Numerous goals, rules, structural changes and formats had to be updated and changed to reach that goal. The library and Director have to follow certain guidelines and policies that are required at the state level. The library is still accredited and new specifications are added to the guidelines every year to make a safe environment for our community. The Livermore Public has books, reference documents, movies, free Wi-Fi, magazines, newspapers, a WII, a meeting room, fax machine (no longer in use), computers, copy machine, and a microfiche machine with county history slides. The library holds book club meetings, board meetings, community meetings, community events, reading programs, adult and youth educational programs, painting tutorials, and is open to new ideas. The library's goal is to support the community. The library is maintained from funds from the City of Livermore, Humboldt County, the State of Iowa, and donations from our Livermore citizens. The present library consists of a Director, an Assistant, and 5 volunteer board members.
