Suggested reading activities designed to both improve skills and develop a love of reading in children up to age 11 There are over 200 projects, plus book lists, resources and sensible suggestions. The book is a collaborative effort that has gleaned what is fun and what works from a wide variety of contributors. Almost every activity that occurs in the home can be made into a reading lesson. Cooking, cleaning, family get-togethers, shopping, watching TV, as well as out-of-home things like walks, local history--almost anything can be a fertile area in which to inculcate a love of reading. The contributors to this book have shown great imagination in their suggestions, all of which are meant to be fun as well as instructive. In fact, fun is the key to this book. Parents are warned not to press when a child loses interest and not to turn what should be a pleasure into a pressured situation. Aware that modern parents have many other tasks besides encouraging their children to read, the book contains activities which children can do while a parent is occupied. Parents are encouraged to dip into the book and pick out the activities they like and to which their children would respond best. The idea is to stay loose, experiment and have a good time. This is a lively, helpful and intelligent approach that should provide parents with more than enough ideas with which to stimulate their offspring. Indeed, if used in the spirit intended, this sourcebook really should put children on the highroad to reading for pleasure. Copyright ŠKirkus Reviews, used with permission.
