Gr 4-7–Donald Jenkins, a seventh grader from a working-class family in Hudson City, NJ, has decided to join the wrestling team. Despite the frustration of losing every day in practice, this small and wiry youngster is determined to succeed. However, Donald's quick temper and aggressiveness are not enough to beat his opponents, as he soon learns after losing his first two matches. He must begin to think on the mat and follow through in order to be victorious. Predictably, Donald eventually succeeds and begins to feel more like a member of his team. Although the author presents several scenarios that could offer more depth to the protagonist and overall story, none of them are explored.
