The Stone Age News

by Fiona MacDonald

School Library Journal :

Gr 5 Up-Using a newspaper format to present history and facts about Viking and Stone Age life is an ingenious and entertaining vehicle to grab readers' attention and inform them. Society pages, religious news, real estate, etc., illustrate many aspects of ancient life in clever, humorous ways. "A Cave of My Own" provides tips on how to convert a cave into a comfortable living space while "Bjorn's Battle Tips" tells about life as a Viking soldier. Even the classified ads are fun and frequently corny. Colorful pages with informative articles, advertising, and heavy use of illustrations result in a wonderful way to introduce readers to Viking and prehistoric life, as well as to interest students in journalism. The texts are easy to understand, light, and breezy. These two titles should spark the imaginations of readers and motivate them to explore the topics in meatier books.-Cynthia M.
