Reed targets majors, and a top-10 habit

U.S. Ryder Cup player Patrick Reed chips onto the second green during the 40th Ryder Cup singles matches at GleneaglesBy Mark Lamport-Stokes SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Reuters) - Already established as one of the best players in the game, American Patrick Reed has set his sights on making a bigger splash at the majors this year while also improving his consistency week-by-week. The 24-year-old Texan has climbed to 15th in the world rankings after winning four PGA Tour titles during the past 18 months, a meteoric rise for someone who had not competed in a major until last season. "That's the one missing piece for me right now, being able to contend and trying to win a major," Reed told Reuters at this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open. "I just want to keep improving, and have a chance coming down the stretch on a Sunday to at least make some noise at a major." Reed clinched his fourth PGA Tour title at the winners-only Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua in Hawaii earlier this month, beating fellow American Jimmy Walker in a playoff.

As U.S. Northeast shivers, Super Bowl fans slap on sunscreen

NFL: NFL: Super Bowl XLIX-Seattle Seahawks-Press ConferenceBy Daniel Wallis PHOENIX (Reuters) - As the northeastern United States shivered under heavy snowstorms, organizers of Sunday's Super Bowl worried about fans suffering from another climatic risk: sunburn. Volunteers in downtown Phoenix have filled dozens of dispensers of SPF 30 sun block, sponsored by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, and placed them on street corners in Super Bowl Central, a 12-block area where corporate pavilions, live music and interactive events are being staged each day leading up to the game. Phoenix, a favorite of elderly retirees who flee the chilly north and are known locally as "snowbirds," is famed for its hot, dry summers and balmy, sun-dappled winter days. "The weather here is amazing," said Alex Ramirez, 18, a waiter at a downtown Phoenix cafe.

McIlroy shoots 66 despite Dubai driving radar being off

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland tees off on the third hole during the Dubai Desert ClassicBy Bernie McGuire DUBAI, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy's driving radar malfunctioned early in his opening round at the Dubai Desert Classic on Thursday but he showed why he is the world's number one golfer by recovering to shoot a 66. I feel like I've started off this tournament pretty well the last few years and it's another good one ... something to build on." The Desert Classic holds special memories for McIlroy because it was the first European Tour victory he picked up six years ago. These days it's sort of what I expect of myself." McIlroy was accompanied by Ryder Cup team mate Martin Kaymer (67) and Englishman Andy Sullivan (65), winner of this month's South African Open. "It was the best day of my life out there playing with these guys and I just enjoyed so much watching Rory and Martin play," said Sullivan after setting the early pace with fellow countryman Lee Westwood and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.
