Search Civil War Era Database - http://www.tn.gov/tsla/resources/civilwar_database.htm A collection of nearly 2,000 pamphlets and complete runs of eight newspapers, which document the diverse perspectives of the Civil War Era (1840-1865). This database covers a vast range of topics, including abolition, politics, religious themes, battle casualties, and the effects of the war on citizens, just to name a few. The service is provided by Proquest and available only to Tennessee residents.


Search 19th Century Newspapers - http://www.tn.gov/tsla/resources/19th_newspapers.htm A full-text searchable, facsimile image database of 200 newspapers, chronicling 19th-century American culture, daily life and events. Provides a broad yet sensitive depiction of the United States in the 1800s valuable to both professional and general researchers. The service is provided by Thomson Gale and available only to Tennessee residents.


TEL (Tennessee Electronic Library) - http://tntel.tnsos.org The Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) is a collection of 33 databases that provide access to over 400,000 magazines, newspapers, essays, podcasts, videos, e-books, primary source materials, and more! TeVA (Tennessee Virtual Archive) - http://teva.contentdm.oclc.org Tennessee Virtual Archive (TeVA), a program of the State Library and Archives to create a digital repository of Tennessee history and culture. Our mission is to bring electronic versions of the state’s rich collections to a wider audience. TeVA provides a searchable array of historical records, photographs, documents, maps, postcards, film, audio and other original materials of enduring value.

The Tennessee State Library and Archives is home to hundreds of thousands of photographs and images that depict the rich and diverse history of Tennessee, including historic events, houses, buildings, and prominent individuals. Although the present database provides access to a growing number of digitized images, only a fraction of the entire TSLA collection is available online.  The photo to the left is of Lucille Keith, taken in Maury County (Tenn.) in 1939. Nashville City Directories - http://www.tn.gov/tsla/CityDirectories.htm 

A collection of digitized copies of the Nashville City Directories starting from the mid nineteenth century. They include directories of the inhabitants and businesses of Nashville and some surrounding area's and much more. The page shown to the left is representative of the advertisements and other illustrations found in each volume and is from the 1867 Nashville City Directory.  The online directories represent a fraction of those housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in print and microfilm formats.
