A UNITED History: Past, Present, Future

There is not enough darkness in the world to snuff out the light of even one small candle - Marian Wright Edelman

Your Library History—CommUNITY

Your library began in a spirit unity by community initiative, for community education, and through community determination. The dream began in December 18, 1955 by the Union Parish Police Jury and the State Library of Louisiana. The State Library placed 9,000 books for the initial collection and operated the library as a demonstration to gauge community interest. Parish-wide library services began March 10, 1956 in a building furnished rent-free by the Union Parish School Board. On December 29, 1956 community property owners voted a 3-mill tax for a 10-year period to continue library service. On October 29, 1966, the tax was renewed with 2.25 mill for operation and .75 mill for building construction. Construction of the current building was begun in May of 1968. The formal opening was held on April 20, 1969 on the site of the former Smith hotel.Total cost was $180.000 and was financed by the local tax with matching funds from the State Library through the Library Services and Construction Act. Community was vision of your library from our past.

Your Library Present—CommUNITY

Your library of today still builds on the spirit of unity among our community. Book/Media collection has grown to over 62,000 and services continue to evolve to reflect the needs of our community. Added technology, media materials, and office services are designed to meet community needs. Your library listens to you by providing books based on the diversity of culture and interests of our patrons. Staff do not just provide expertise, they provide friendship and family as neighbors in our community. Community is the core value of your library today.

Your Library Future—CommUNITY

Your library of tomorrow is yet to come. It will require your involvement, your insight, and your creativity as we seek to grow together. In August of 2007, our needs assessment process identified ideas from over 100 patrons. We love hearing from you, what you value, and what you need from your library. We need our community to continue to be proactive in seeking initiatives to help us grow and expand. Please take the time to complete comment cards, assist in volunteerism, or simply stop by to say hello. One of our favorite phrases is, “Have you ever thought about…” We have much to do to reach your library of the future. One goal in the coming year is to form a “Friends of the Library” program that will consist of patrons interested in making a difference. This is your future—library. Become active today. Community is what your library needs to reach tomorrow.
