Reconsideration of Material

The Washington County Public Library supports the principles of intellectual freedom inherent in the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

Despite the quality of the selection policy, occasional objections may be made.  If a complaint is made, the following procedures will be followed:

1) The complainant will be informed of the selection and complaint procedures.
2) The complainant must submit a formal “Request for Reconsideration of Materials” (see Appendix).
3) Upon completion of the form, the Board of Trustees will appoint a review committee composed of the director (or another staff member), a trustee, and a library user.
4) The review committee will take the following steps after receiving the challenged material:
a. read, view, or listen to the material in its entirety;
b. check general acceptance of the material by reading reviews and consulting recommended lists;
c. determine the extent to which the material meets the criteria for selection; and
d. present a written recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
5) This recommendation will be considered at an official Board meeting where the Board will decide to retain or withdraw the challenged material and will issue a formal response to the complainant.
