Starred Review. Fans of Higgs's Scottish historical trilogy (Thorn in My Heart; Fair Is the Rose; and Whence Came a Prince) will be happy to find that the saga of the McKie family continues in this reinterpretation of the story of Dinah from the Book of Genesis. Davina McKie, the mute 17-year-old daughter of Jaime and Leana, is devastated when her father decides to send her beloved twin brothers far away for schooling. To ease Davina's pains, Jaime has his daughter visit cousins on the Isle of Arran, where she is invited to entertain the Duke of Hamilton's guests with her fiddling. But one guest, Somerled MacDonald, becomes too enamored of the girl with disastrous consequences. Higgs, whose historical romances are refreshingly different, has written an absorbing, well-crafted novel with a gut-wrenching plot that will move readers. Highly recommended for most collections.
