Though not a direct sequel, Hillier’s successor to Wonderland (2015) is a welcome return to the cursed town of Seaside, Washington. Back in 2001, friends Barb, Lorelei, and Nicolette were hanging out at Seaside’s iconic theme park when they encountered a serial killer. Lorelei died that night, a man named Samuel Figg confessed, and the case was closed. Lorelei’s death destroyed Barb and Nicolette’s relationship, and the two haven’t spoken since. Barb now leads a quiet life in Seaside as an investigative reporter, and Nicolette has rebranded herself as a reality TV star. But then, Samuel emerges as a guest on a true-crime show about his killings. While he did murder three other girls, he states that Lorelei was not one of his victims. Meanwhile, Barb is on the scene when a body is found on the beach. She thinks it’s another reality star, someone Nicolette might know, but it’s a mystery regarding how the body got there—or if it might be connected to the new revelation about Lorelei’s case. Barb and Nicolette must confront their pasts to tease out the truth about both murders. Hillier delivers another knockout thriller with compulsively readable prose and sly, subtle twists.
