Patrons who wish to use any of the NC Live resources should login using their library card number as their password. The username is Nantahala Regional Library.

If you are a library cardholder and you'd like to access your account to place holds on items or renew items, you'll be asked for "Patron / Alternate ID Number." What's that? It's your library card number, which can be found on the front of your library card. You'll also be asked for a PIN, which is the last four digits of your phone number. If you have questions, contact your local library.

If you or someone you know, for any reason is unable to get to your library and you would like bookmobile service, please call the Nantahala Regional Library at 837-2025.

Peter Rabbit and Friends Party

There will be a Peter Rabbit and Friends Party on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Murphy Public Library. Come and celebrate the lovable character, Peter Rabbit, created by Beatrix Potter, by listening to stories, playing games and making crafts. Friends of the Murphy Public Library Potluck

The Friends of the Murphy Public Library group is hosting a potluck dinner on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, beginning at 6 p.m. at the library. Bring a covered dish and enjoy their guest speaker, Louise McDonald, discussing "Quilting in the Mountains."

Annual Arts & Crafts Supplies Sale and Book Sale

The Friends of the Murphy Public Library group is hosting its annual Arts & Crafts Supplies Sale and Book Sale. These sales will take place on Thursday, June 20, 2013, and on Friday, June 21, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library. There will be some great items for sale! All proceeds from these sales go towards the Cherokee County Schools Spelling Bee.

Mad Hatter Tea Party

There will be a Mad Hatter Tea Party on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at 6 p.m. at the Moss Memorial Library. Come and celebrate the world Lewis Carroll created in his book Alice Adventure's in Wonderland by playing games, making crafts, participating in activities and eating refreshments. This program is recommended for teenagers who are between the ages of 11 to 17 years old. Costumes are welcome but you do not have to wear a costume to attend this event. It is being hosted by our Youth Services Librarian, Miss Bridget, please call her at 828-837-2025 if you have any questions about this program.

Annual Friends of the Library Open House

The Moss Memorial Library is hosting their annual Friends of the Library Open House. This will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2013, beginning at 2 p.m. at the library. This year we are also celebrating the new addition to the library building. Come and see this beautiful renovated facility! We are asking you to also please bring your favorite appetizer, dessert or snack (with the recipe.)

Today is International Sushi Day. Today is the anniversary of the declaration of war that began the War of 1812. After much debate in Congress between "hawks" such as Henry Clay and John Calhoun and "doves" such as John Randolph, Congress issued a declaration of war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. The action was prompted primarily by Britain's violation of America's rights on the high seas and British incitement of Native American warfare on the frontier. War was seen by some as a way to acquire Florida and Canada. The hostilities ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814, at Ghent, Belgium. Today is also the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. June 18, 1815 is the date of the decisive defeat of Napoleon by a combined Anglo-Allied and Prussian army led by Generals Wellington and Blucher, near Waterloo in central Belgium. Today is the birthday of Kay Kyser. This American bandleader was born James King Kern Kyser on June 18, 1906 at Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Kyser's radio show, "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge," enjoyed immense popularity in the swing era. A shrewd showman and performer, he said he never learned to read music or play an instrument. Among his hit recordings were "Three Little Fishes" and "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." Today is also the birthday of Sammy Cahn. This Tin Pan Alley legend was born on June 18, 1913. Cahn was nominated for 26 Academy Awards and won four times for "Three Coins in the Fountain" in 1954, "All the Way" in 1957, "High Hopes" in 1959, and "Call Me Irresponsible" in 1963. In the late 1940s, Cahn began working with composer Jimmy Van Heusen and the two in essence were the personal songwriting team for Frank Sinatra. Cahn wrote the greatest number of Sinatra hits, including "Love and Marriage," "The Second Time Around" and "The Tender Trap." Today is the anniversary of the first American woman in space. Dr. Sally Ride, a 32-year-old physicist and pilot, functioned as a "mission specialist" and became the first American woman in space on June 18, 1983, when she began a six-day mission aboard the space shuttle Challenger.

Friends of the Moss Memorial Library Raffle

The Friends of the Moss Memorial Library group is hosting a raffle. You may purchase tickets for it at the library. The tickets are one dollar each or five dollars for six. There is a wide variety of items that you may win. These include: a crocheted shawl; 50/50 cash; a hand-blown glass vase; a framed nature photograph; and a handmade journal. Winners will be announced on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. at the Butternut Creek Festival. You do not have to be present to win. All proceeds from this raffle will go towards the Moss Memorial Library.

Summer Reading Program 2013

Our 2013 Summer Reading Program will begin on Monday, June 3, 2013. It will continue until Monday, August 5, 2013. The theme for the children this year is "Dig Into Reading" and the theme for teens is "Beneath the Surface." Miss Bridget has been working hard to make this our best summer yet!

Teen Summer Reading 2013

The theme for 2013 Teen Summer Reading is "Beneath the Surface. It should be an exciting summer for the teens in our area. Miss Bridget, our Youth Services Librarian, has some terrific programs planned for this group. There will also be a reading contest with a chance to win a super prize for those who complete the contest. For details about the events and reading contest, click here.

June is...

June, the sixth month in the Gregorian calendar, was named according to legend for Juno, the goddess of women and of marriage. If this is true, it is an appropriate name, since June is a favored month for weddings. Some authorities, however, claim that the month was named for the Juniores, the lower branch of the Roman senate, or that it was associated with the consulate of Junius Brutus.

Many traditional events are associated with the month of June. Among the most famous are the great flower festivals of the world. June has long been commencement time, when students graduate from schools and colleges. It is also the month when the British celebrate the official, not the actual, birthday of Queen Elizabeth, scheduled to assure more favorable weather for the public ceremonies. The most ancient of June festivals are those associated with Midsummer Eve, in which bonfires have been added to the merrymaking and festivities from time immemorial.

The special flower for the month of June is the rose, and the gems are the moonstone, the pearl and the alexandrite.

June is the Great Outdoors Month, Dairy Month, Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and National Safety Month.
