Children’s Services -- Library Assistant

POSITION: Library Assistant – Children’s Department

POSITION SUMMARY:  The library has an opening for a part-time library assistant in the Children’s Department. This position is primarily at the children’s information/reference desk, with coverage at other locations in the library on an “as needed” basis.  The person in this position is also responsible for providing outreach programs in the community, specifically for our “tween” residents.   Varied projects with an emphasis on assistance in public services, working with all ages. Expectations include the ability to meet and work with the public as well as the ability to work as a member of a team.   Computer skills and familiarity with current software programs required. Understanding of how public library materials are selected, used, and deselected is a plus.  Creativity, an interest in developing programs that make the library an integral part of the community, and the ability to lead book discussions a plus.   Must be able to interact with and plan programming for children.  Includes other duties as assigned.  Hours will include at least one evening per week and approximately one weekend per month, with a Sunday bin retrieval rotation once every three months.  This position is 20 hours per week and requires a bachelor’s degree. 

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree, any subject.  Computer skills.  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.  Background check.

Preferred: Previous library experience; experience working with children;  Understanding of how library materials are selected and deselected.

Starting rate of pay is $11.76/hour.

All library positions include sick leave accrual, vacation accrual, and paid holiday benefits.  This is a Union eligible position.
