INTERLIBRARY LOAN POLICY

This policy covers interlibrary loan activity outside of the agreements and policies established by Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library’s participation in the MELCat (Michigan Electronic Library Catalog) program.

Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library endorses the American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code for the Unites States and utilizes the ALA Interlibrary Loan Request Form for all non-MELCat Interlibrary Loan Requests.   The Library also complies with Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.) and its accompanying guidelines.

Interlibrary loan services are available to any St. Joseph City or St. Joseph Township resident or members in a household that has purchased a non-resident fee card.  Interlibrary Loan materials may only be checked out on the library card of the person requesting the materials.   The account of the library cardholder must be valid and in good standing.  The ALA Interlibrary Loan Request Form must be used when initiating any non-MEL ILL requests.

Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library will attempt to borrow from and will lend to libraries requesting materials through the White Pine Cooperative Interlibrary Loan program.  The patron is responsible for the initial request fee charged by the White Pine Library Cooperative and for any postal fees incurred by receiving or returning the ILL item.    The request fee must be paid before the ILL request will be initiated by MPPML.

MPPML will not provide ILL service for the following materials (though photocopies may be provided as allowable by copyright law):

• Items available through the MEL system
• Items published in the past six (6) months
• Items that are owned by Maud Preston Palenske Library (unless all copies are lost or missing)
• Genealogy materials
• Bound periodicals
• Books printed before 1900
• Software
• E-books and downloadable audio
• Reference materials

Length of loan periods, renewal options, overdue, lost and damaged fines, lending fees, and conditions for use are determined by the supplying libraries.  Unless otherwise instructed on the ALA ILL Request form, the White Pine Cooperative will only request materials for which there is no fee.  In the case of supplying libraries charging a lending fee, patrons are responsible for and must pay the fees at the time the service is requested.  If the fee is more than the maximum amount noted on the ALA Interlibrary Loan Request Form the request will not be placed and the patron will be notified.   A new form must be filled out if the patron wishes to continue with the request at the higher rate.

If the patron fails to return or damages an Interlibrary Loan item any costs associated with the lost or damaged item will be the responsibility of the patron.

Failure to pay any ILL fines or fees will result in suspension of all Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library lending services.
