The Friends of the Portland Public Library is an organization with the 501(c) 3 status from the IRS. We are a group of dedicated supporters working toward enhancing our community with an excellent library. This organization has helped to provide additional programs, services, equipment, books and materials that the general budget of the library cannot support.\r\n

The group meets on the last Monday of every month (Jan - Nov) at 6:30 p.m. This is effective January 2012. Members are encouraged to attend to get to know other members and find out about the needs of your library.

This list is provided in order to increase awareness of the officials that serve us and have a fundamental role in making a difference in this library for this community.

The Portland Area Library Foundation (PALS)

The Portland Area Library Foundation (PALS) was started in 2007 to raise funds for a new library building. Now that the library is in their beautiful new building, the Foundation is transitioning into an endowment foundation rather than a fundraising entity.

What is the definition of a foundation and a financial endowment? A foundation is a legal categorization of nonprofit organizations that will typically either donate funds and support to other organizations, or provide the source of funding for its own charitable purposes. A financial endowment is typically organized as a public charity, private foundation, or trust. Among the institutions that commonly manage an endowment are: academic institutions, cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, hospitals or religious establishments.

An endowment may come with stipulations regarding its usage. In some circumstances an endowment may be required to be spent in a certain way or alternatively invested, with the principal to remain intact in perpetuity or for a defined period. This allows for the donation to have an impact over a longer period of time than if it were all spent at one time.

The Portland Area Library Foundation Endowment is being started with a $50,000 gift to the library by the late Dr. Thomas Brumbaugh. He has been a wonderful contributor for several years to the library and this money was left in his will to continue his support. The Foundation is very grateful for his generosity.

This endowment will be open to anyone who wants to make a donation to this worthy cause. Donations can be given in numerous ways such as in the form of a lump sum gift or left in a person’s will. The principal of any gift will be invested and only the interest will be used to support the needs of the library.

Many libraries have endowment funds to enhance their service to their communities. The city and county governments cannot meet all the needs of the library and shouldn’t have to. This can be the security the library needs when there are economic downturns or when there are great needs for capital improvement etc.   PALS
